About Us

Like many good things, the choir began in the pub! Back in 2011 after a few drinks and songs in Sutton Benger, a small group decided to perform at a local flower festival and so The Village Singers was born.

Nine years later, the choir has over 70 members from many of the villages and towns around Chippenham and our ages range from teenagers to over 80. With no audition necessary, the choir is open to all and we rehearse together weekly during term time. We love to sing but we also love to have fun; friendship and socialising is a really important part of our ethos and is what makes our choir so special.

Although we come together to sing for fun, we take our singing very seriously. Our Musical Directorship of Rachel McCorry and Jen Bamford have the highest expectation of musical excellence with a strong focus on improving our individual musicianship and the quality of our performance and repertoire. Our programmes range from sacred and choral pieces, classical and opera to spirituals, folk, pop and show tunes. Within the principal choir there are also smaller auditioned groups so that there is always something for everybody to enjoy singing and listening to.

We perform two programmes twice a year in various local halls and churches and are in demand for weddings and other events. We have also travelled on two European tours. In 2014 we sang in Ypres Cathedral and at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Bruges. In 2017 we performed in three stunning Paris venues – Eglise de la Madeleine, Eglise St Louis en l’Ile and Eglise St Germain l’Auxerrois.

On 21st January 2019 we performed the US Premier of Symphonic Adiemus, in the Carnegie Hall, New York , as part of an international choir with composer, Sir Karl Jenkins in residence.
It was an amazing experience and a huge privilege to perform in such a world-class venue with great musicians. We had a wonderful time, learned a huge amount and have come home even more tightly gelled as a choir. Being such a young choir, it is testament to our hard work and Rachel’s to have been invited to perform in such an historic venue.
